Echinacea is a herb most widely known for its treatment of the common cold. The jury is out, however, as to how effective it actually is. Research has found that the herb does reduce inflammation, which can treat initial cold and flu symptoms, but many researchers claim that it cannot prevent or cure it.
Also known as the coneflower, Echinacea does however seem to be particularly beneficial for boosting the immune system as it stimulates the body into producing more white blood cells which improves the body’s resistance to disease. It can also speed up healing in skin wounds.
There is also evidence that Echinacea can help prevent vaginal yeast infections when used in conjunction with other creams.
Echinacea can be bought over the counter in many forms, such as tablets and drops. It is not advised to take the herb if you are pregnant, lactating or allergic to any of the ingredients.
