Name: Marnie Steffny
Charity involved in: TEARS
How long have you been involved here: Since November 2019
Where is the charity based: Sunnydale (Cape Town)
Tell us a bit more about what you do: Adoptions Co-ordinator for the Kennels, which involves overseeing the dog and puppy adoption process from application to home check and adoption, and lots in between.
What do you love about what you do: Getting to know the dogs. Working with shy dogs, and dogs which have had a rough time before coming to TEARS, gaining their confidence, watching them flourish and start trusting people again. Spending time talking to potential adoptees to make the best match, and then watching a dog head off to its new home, especially if it’s been with us for a long time. Plus I get to play with puppies 🙂
Which is your favourite Regal product: CBD Remedy
Are you a cat or a dog person: Both! Although horses are my favourite of all.
What is your favourite pet quote or saying: “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas” which is borrowed from a UK welfare organisation.
How many pets do you have at home: one dog, one cat
Most memorable moment in charity: Experiencing the incredible goodwill and fantastic support from everyone who fostered and adopted a dog at the beginning of Lockdown, when the decision was made to evacuate the kennels. Walking along the rows of empty kennels afterwards… silent, deserted, surreal. That will stay with me forever. Seeing the look on a dog’s face when he realises he’s going home. Gets me every time. Too many to pick one.
Anything else you would like to add: Being involved in changing lives for animals and humans is a privilege! Sometimes I wonder who’s being rescued….. the dog, or the person adopting….
